Novotna wins on final day of Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas – Junior Natalie Novotna claims win in singles as the Virginia Tech women's tennis team wrapped up competition on Sunday at the Big 5 Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
 
Tech's Natalie Novotna played a close match against Renee McBryde, who competes for a Texas A&M team that finished last season ranked fourth in the nation. The Tech player won the first set 6-4, but McBryde looked to even the match as the two were knotted at 6 to force the tiebreak. Novotna held on to win it 7-6(4).
 
The Hokies will be back on the court next weekend, hosting the Hokie Invitational. Novotna will take the court at the ITA All-American Championships, competing in the main draw beginning Oct. 4.

DAY THREE
FORT WORTH, Texas –
Freshman Annie Clark tabs first collegiate win on Saturday at the Big 5 Challenge in Forth Worth, Texas.
 
Clark squared off against Arizona's Taylor Tamblyn with the two keeping it close in the opening set. They were tied at 5 before the Hokies' freshman won the next two to take it 7-5. In the second set, Clark rolled to 6-0 win.
 
The Hokies will wrap up the Big 5 Challenge on Sunday.

DAY TWO
FORT WORTH, Texas –
Shene Disbergen and Nina Sorkin led the Hokies on Friday during the second day of competition at the Big 5 Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
 
Sorkin rolled in singles with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 win over Auburn's Annabella Bowen. Her teammate had a battle on her hands as Disbergen went to three against the Tigers' Caroline Turner. Disbergen dropped the first set 6-2, but came back to take the second 6-3. In the super tiebreak, Disbergen secured the win 10-6.
 
In doubles, the pair teamed up for the win over Arizona's Camila Wesbrooks and Gitte Heynemans with a score of 6-4.
 
The Hokies will return to the court Saturday for the next round.

DAY ONE
FORT WORTH, Texas –
The Virginia Tech women's tennis team opened the Big 5 Challenge on Thursday with Shene Disbergen picking up the singles win at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Forth Worth, Texas.
 
Disbergen fell behind, dropping the first set 6-3 to Missouri's Ellie Wright. The Tech junior powered back to take the second set 6-4. In the super tiebreak, Disbergen rolled to the win 10-2.
 
The Hokies' Nina Sorkin battled in her day one match as she fell 6-3 in the opening set to the Tigers' Mackenzy Middlebrook. The sophomore came back, rolling to the 6-1 win in the second. In the deciding frame, the two kept it close and were tied at 9 before Middlebrooks held on to secure the match 11-9.
 
Virginia Tech will be back on the court Friday with singles and doubles.
