ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech women's soccer team outshot its opponent for the sixth time this season, however both the Hokies and the host Georgia Bulldogs got fantastic play from their goalkeepers and, after 110 minutes of action, the teams fought to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon at UGA Soccer Stadium.
The Hokies (2-1-3) took 19 shots in the game, of which nine were on goal led by Bridget Patch's three. However, Bulldog goalie Emory Wegener stopped all nine, including two in the first overtime period to preserve her shutout.
Georgia (2-2-2) had 13 shots in the game, six of which were on goal. Tech's goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made five stops in the game – including one just before the final whistle off a free kick to keep her clean sheet.
The Hokies' Jaylyn Thompson also made a "team" save off a Bulldog corner in the 102nd minute, as the first attempt hit the post and the second – a header by Bella Ponzi off the rebound – was deflected away by Thompson.
FROM COACH ADAIR
"I'm really pleased and proud of the group effort today. I thought we played pretty well. I think we were the better side for much of the game and we controlled much of the tempo by creating a lot of chances. We put up 19 shots and created a ton of chances and played some good soccer – found some midfield play and really linked up well through the lines. Obviously frustrated that we didn't break the net and put the ball in the back of the net. I thought we had a few good chances and their keeper made some really good saves. We just need to keep plugging along and keep playing and playing our guts out. We got another shutout for Mandy, so I'm happy with that as well."
