Hokies set for two ITA events this weekend

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men's tennis team is set for a pair of tournaments with stacked fields this weekend. Senior Mitch Harper will be traveling to Malibu, California to compete in the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters Sept. 20-23. His teammates Henrik Korsgaard, Alex Ribeiro, Carlo Donato and Jason Kros are set to compete at the Milwaukee Classic with a trip to ITA Nationals on the line.

ITA MASTERS
Harper was one of the 32 men to accept an invitation to the field. Selections were made from the top players from each Division I conference. Harper enters the contest with a No. 12 ranking and will face Dayton's No. 77 Jordan Benjamin in the opening round.

The competition will also feature mixed doubles. Harper will be paired with Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami. Perez-Somarriba is the 2018 ITA Division I Women's National Player To Watch, and she enters the contest ranked No. 5 in the preseason standings.

Play will begin on Pepperdine University's courts, Thursday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. EST with 16 mixed doubles matches followed by both gender single's rounds and concluding with another round of mixed doubles. Harper will take take the court in singles at the Malibu Raquet Club at 5 p.m. ET.

Champions of both the men's and women's singles matches at the Oracle ITA Masters will earn automatic berth into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Arizona.

MILWAUKEE CLASSIC
Korsgaard and Ribeiro hit the court for the first time this season while Kros and Donato were in action two weeks ago at the Southern Intercollegiates. Ribeiro enters the field ranked No. 101 in the ITA preseason standings, and Kros is 117th. Ribeiro is also ranked No. 12 in doubles with Korsgaard.

Joining the Hokies in the field are athletes from Alabama, BYU, Cleveland State, DePaul, Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Minnesota, Navy, Nebraska, NC State, Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, San Diego, Southern Cal, Tennessee, VCU and Wisconsin.

Competition at The Town Club will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. with the first round of singles followed by the opening round of doubles.

Winners of singles at both events will earn a bid into the ITA Fall National Championships. The doubles winners in Milwaukee will also earn bids.
