COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Members of the Virginia Tech women's tennis team wrapped up the second day of competition at the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic as Samantha Gillas and Dori Mesmer claimed wins on Saturday in College Park, Maryland.
Freshman Gillas claimed two wins in the consolation bracket of singles. She opened the day with a shutout of Coppin State's Tinashe Gwaze, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round, Gillas struggled in the first set, falling to Towson's Alexa Martinez in a tiebreak 7-6(4). Gillas powered back for the next two sets, claiming them 6-1, 6-4.
Mesmer rolled past Coppin's Auja Hrnjic 6-0, 6-1 to open the day. In the next round, the Tech sophomore fell to Towson's Amelia Lawson 6-1, 6-4.
The Hokies were also on the court in doubles. Mesmer paired up with Jade Woo, but the two faltered in the main draw against Maryland's Kate Yemelyanenka and Saya Usui. The Tech pair secured the win in the consolation match as they defeated Coppin's Precious Udofe and Gwaze, holding the pair scoreless 6-0.
In the next round, Mesmer paired up with Gillas, but the two fell to the Georgetown pair of Sydney Goodson and Eena DeSantis, 6-4.
The Hokies will wrap up the Bedford Cup on Sunday.
