Hokies return to Richmond for Janney Invitational

The Virginia Tech men's golf team returns to action at the Janney Invitational in Richmond, Virginia. The two-day event, hosted by VCU, will be played at the Tuckahoe Creek Course of the Country Club of Virginia on Monday and Tuesday.

The Hokies make this event an annual stop and have enjoyed great success in the state capital through the years. Tech has won the event in four of the last six years and finished second in last year's event, as Connor Burgess tied for second individually. Hokie graduates Joey Lane and Scott Vincent each won individual titles in the tournament in the past.

Eleven teams will compete for the title. Tech is the only ACC school competing and is one of six schools from the Commonwealth of Virginia in the field. Penn State, which won the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke last week, highlights the field.

The Hokies will travel eight golfers to Richmond. Three of the starting five are Richmond-area natives and six of the eight are from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Connor Johnson Jr., will play out of the first position for Tech. The freshman from Richmond plays out of the Country Club of Virginia. He tied for ninth place in his collegiate debut at the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke last weekend, with all three rounds were par-or-better.

Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, is second for the Hokies. His second place finish a year ago at this event is his career-best finish. He tied for 34th at Duke last week.

Joey Jordan will play third for Tech. The senior from Richmond has been a regular in the Hokies starting line-up since joining the team last spring. This will be his first appearance at the Janney Invitational.

Another Richmond-area native, Drew Brockwell, will play fourth for Tech. The freshman from nearby Chesterfield, Virginia, made his collegiate debut at Duke last weekend. He and Johnson played scholastically at St. Christopher's in Richmond and combined forces over the summer to win the VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship.

Rounding out the starting line-up for the Hokies is Slade Pickering. The sophomore from North West, South Africa, is making his 2018-19 debut in this tournament. He started in nine events as a freshman.

Tech will have three players competing as individuals. Tom Crow, a junior from Virginia Beach, Virginia, played at Duke last weekend. A pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts joins him. Bradley de Beer is a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa and Cameron Moore is a freshman from Richmond, who had an outstanding junior career playing out of the Dominion Club.
