Hokies set to host preseason A-10 favorite VCU

BLACKSBURG – Playing in its first midweek match of the year, Virginia Tech's volleyball team will go at it with preseason Atlantic 10 Conference pick VCU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET at Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum.

Tech (8-1) leads the all-time series against the Rams (4-6) 20-8 and has won 14 straight. The Hokies are a perfect 5-0 at home versus VCU.

The match will broadcast on ACC Network Extra, featuring Jon Laaser as play-by-play and Jake Lawrence as color analyst.

The last time out, Tech fell to Samford 3-0 to wrap up the Bobcat Invitational in Athens, Ohio. Despite the loss, the Hokies had a successful weekend by picking up two wins, including a 3-1 victory over preseason MAC favorite Ohio.

Sophomore Marisa Cerchio and senior Jaila Tolbert were named to the all-tournament team for their performances. Tolbert racked up 37 kills with a .415 clip and nine blocks on the weekend, while Cerchio pounded down 26 kills on a .300 clip and swatted 18 attacks.

Outside hitters Kaity Smith and Ester Talamazzi shined as well, with each posting two double-doubles on the same day on Friday, Sept. 7 against IUPUI and Ohio.

This past weekend, junior Carol Raffety became the 17th Hokie to scoop up 1,000 career digs. With her 1,029 career digs, Raffety passed Amanda Yelsh (1991-94) to move up to No. 16 all-time in school history.

Promotions on Tuesday night will be Touch-a-Truck, Corps of Cadets Appreciation and Hometown Heroes Night, recognizing all of our first responders in recognition of 9/11. There will be an opportunity for children to look at the first responder' command and vehicles. It also is Student Hokie Club Night, too.

Virginia Tech Athletics is implementing a clear-bag policy at all of its games this academic year. The policy will allow for a better and quicker experience at gates and is also a public safety measure that is being successfully implemented at other large venues including fellow ACC venues. SCOUTING VCU

•  VCU is coming off a 2-1 weekend in Tallahassee, Florida, defeating Florida A&M and Southern Miss while falling in three sets to Florida State. The Rams are 0-2 this year against ACC opponents, losing to No. 9 Pittsburgh 3-0 and FSU 3-0.

•  The Rams have beaten a Power Five team, though, taking down Oklahoma 3-1 in a neutral-site match on Sept. 1 in South Orange, New Jersey. They own an overall record of 4-6, but have won three out of their last four matches.

•  Head Coach Jody Rogers enters her sixth year in Richmond after leading the Rams to a 30-3 overall record last fall, guiding them to an Atlantic 10 title and NCAA Tournament berth. Rogers, the reigning A-10 Coach of the Year, owns an overall record of 110-61 and a 50-20 mark in conference play at VCU.

•  Middle blocker Jasmin Sneed paces the Rams, owning the best blocks per set average (1.51) in the A-10 and the second-highest hitting percentage (.381) in the league. Outside hitter Vicky Giommarini has racked up a team-high 102 kills, 84 digs and 20 blocks.
