BLACKSBURG – Emily Schiesl won her first collegiate race to highlight the performances of the Virginia Tech cross country teams at the season-opening Virginia Tech Invitational held Friday at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on the Hokies' campus.
 
Schiesl led a 1-2-3 sweep of the top places, as the Tech women's team won the Invitational with 38 points. Liberty came in second with 60, edging Washington & Lee, which had 64. On the men's side, Liberty took the top spot in the team race with 29 points. The Hokies only had four men's runners in uniform, with the rest of the Tech contingent running unattached.

Schiesl, a redshirt freshman, ran the women's 4K race in a time of 14 minutes, 31.1 seconds. She finished more than four seconds ahead of teammate Ellie Brush and more than six seconds ahead of Ella Breidenstine, who came in third. The Hokies' Shannon Quinn finished seventh with a time of 15:09.5.
 
Osman Humeida, a redshirt freshman, was the top finisher for the Hokies in the men's 6K race, coming in sixth with a time of 18:43.7. Thierry Siewe Yanga, another redshirt freshman, finished 12th with a time of 19:16.4.
 
Two other Tech men's runners, Ryan Hughes and Matthias Cannon, ran unattached and came in seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Hokies return to action in two weeks when they compete in the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite. The alumni race starts at 5:30 p.m., with the women's 6K race starting at 6 and the men's 8K race at 6:40.
