Johnson scores again, Patch with the game winner in Tech 2-1 victory

BLACKSBURG – Freshman Karlie Johnson scored her second goal of the season and junior Bridget Patch headed home a corner kick as the Virginia Tech women's soccer team put its first tally in the win column on Friday night at Thompson Field with a 2-1 victory in nonconference action over the visiting UNCW Seahawks.

The Hokies (1-0-2), who outshot UNCW 4-1 in the first half, put more pressure on the Seahawk defense after the break, recording 14 shots and nine corners after the intermission and finally breaking through in the 71st minute when Johnson collected a rebounded shot from Molly Feighan for her second goal of the season.

Just over seven minutes later, Emily Gray crossed a ball in from the corner and Patch headed it past UNCW goalkeeper Caitie Broderick for her first goal of the year, the third of her career. It marked the first game-winning goal of her Tech career.

However, UNCW (2-1-0) responded 37 second later when Audrey Harding scored her first of 2018 off an assist from Talia Parrous.

Tech junior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, who made two saves on the night, kept UNCW off the scoreboard over the final 11-plus minutes to pick up her first win of the season and the 19th of her Tech career.
