GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech players Connor Coward, Luke Horanski, Stevie Mangrum and Ian Seymour were among the 50 ACC student-athletes named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced today by the league office.
It's the second consecutive year Tech has had four selections chosen to the squad, it marks the 13th straight postseason the Hokies have had at least two members and it ties for the second-most ever – the 2007 team had a total of five Hokies make the team. Tech is one of seven ACC schools this season to have at least four players named to the team.
Coward, a graduated senior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, highlights the Hokies selections as he is chosen for the second straight year, becoming just the 11th Tech player to receive the honor in multiple seasons. The marketing major capped his final season in Blacksburg by being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.
Joining Coward on the postseason academic team and earning the honor for the first time are Horanski, a junior from Dugald, Manitoba, Canada who is working towards a degree in economics, Mangrum, junior psychology major from Charlottesville, Virginia, and Seymour, a freshman engineering major out of Westborough, Massachusetts.
The ACC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year was NC State's Brian Brown. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. To view the entire team, CLICK HERE.
