GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Carlo Donato along with juniors Mitch Harper and Jason Kros have all been named to the 2018 Men's Tennis All-ACC Academic Team as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.
Duke led with six representatives on the team while Notre Dame and Wake Forest each had five. Virginia Tech, Florida State and Louisville earned three spots each.
Donato, a business major, was 15-7 in his first dual season, playing primarily at the four and five. He had crucial single points in close 4-3 wins over No. 13 Florida State, No. 64 Clemson and No. 68 Georgia Tech. He also claimed singles wins in matches against ranked foes No. 29 NC State and No. 69 VCU. Donato was strong for the Hokies in doubles, helping to secured the needed doubles point in the 4-3 wins over UVA and FSU. He finished the season ranked 54th in doubles nationally with teammate Mitch Harper after the pair defeated No. 33 and No. 31 during the season.
Harper's honor caps off a standout season in which the junior was named All-ACC First Team, ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch, earned an at-large bid to NCAA Singles and claimed a spot during the fall at the ITA Nationals in both singles and doubles. The finance major finished the season ranked 27th in singles and 54th in doubles. In singles, Harper tallied a 20-12 overall record and was 15-7 this spring at the one as he tallied 14 ranked singles wins during 2017-18, including five over opponents who finished the season ranked in the top-40. He closed out the season with 10-3 tally in the final weeks, helping the Hokies to wins over No. 13 Florida State (deciding match), No. 42 Miami, No. 49 Louisville and defending national champion No. 41 Virginia.
Kros also had a breakout season, finishing the year with a 23-13 overall record while going 13-10 in duals, playing primarily at the two. The Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise major had key singles wins in 4-3 wins over Georgia Tech, No. 41 Louisville and No. 43 Virginia. He tallied five ranked wins on the year. In doubles, Kros was 23-16 overall, competing with several partners throughout the fall and spring. He and teammate Abraham Asaba helped clinch needed doubles points in 4-3 wins over No. 13 Florida State and No. 41 Louisville.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
