BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Committee joined the growing national conversation surrounding mental health in high-performing student-athletes by participating in the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Mental Health Awareness video contest.
The contest was designed to promote mental health awareness and to break stigmas surrounding mental health. It called for the creation of a two-minute "Break the Stigma" video, which was evaluated on effectiveness of message, creativity, quality and ability to demonstrate how to break the stigma and promote mental health awareness.
A small committee within Virginia Tech SAAC came together, with guidance from Dr. Gary Bennett, the athletics department's sport psychologist, to develop the idea and details of the video. The video contest winner was announced May 1 to kick off Mental Health Month by Division I SAAC. And although the Hokies did not claim the top prize, the video is just another way that Virginia Tech Athletics is facing mental health head on.
