The Virginia Tech women's golf team posted an opening round 7-over 295 on Monday and is in fourth place at the Hurricane Invitational. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 6,150-yard Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.
Elizabeth Bose leads the Hokies. She shot a 1-under 71 and is in seventh place individually. The junior from Norfolk, Virginia trails co-leaders Tilda Larrson of Barry and Renate Grimstad of Miami by three strokes. Bose had three birdies in her first round.
Sarah Spicer, a redshirt freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 13th place with a 1-over 73 and Amanda Hollandsworth, a redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia, is tied for 20th at 74. Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 44th at 77 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, is tied for 56th at 79. Today was Sarah Spicer's first collegiate round. Mahar had an eagle-3 at the 518-yard, par 5 15th hole.
Oklahoma has the team lead at 3-under 285, three strokes ahead of the host Miami Hurricanes, seven strokes ahead of Coastal Carolina and 10 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Maryland is fifth at 297, Division II power Barry is sixth at 299, Penn State is seventh at 300 and Florida International is eighth at 301. Mercer is ninth at 302, South Florida is 10th at 305, South Dakota State is 11th at 306, Kentucky is 12th at 308 and Middle Tennessee State is 13th at 310.
