QUICK HITTERS
Tech stays on the road for its third ACC series of 2018: After opening up its ACC schedule at home against Pittsburgh, Tech will play its second straight ACC road series at Boston College. The three-game set will begin on Friday, but with an altered first pitch time - now starting at 2:30 p.m.

Hokies against Boston College: Virginia Tech's history with Boston College dates back to the BIG EAST days as their first meeting was a three-game series in Blacksburg in 2001. The two teams have faced each other every year since, except three times - in 2005, 2009 and 2014. In the all-time series, the Hokies lead 24-17 and have won five of the last seven series and eight of 14 overall. At home, Tech is 17-5, but just 6-12 on the road which includes winning just one conference series, two games to one back on May 3-5, 2013.

Coach Szefc against Boston College: As the head coach at Maryland, current Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc faced the Eagles a total of six times - in two ACC weekend series. In 2013, he led the Terps to a series win (2-1) in College Park, Maryland (May 16-18), which included a 5-4 win in 10 innings in the third game. However, in his only series at Boston College, April 25 (a DH) and April 27, 2015, the Eagles took all three.

Speaking of Coach Szefc: During the Pittsburgh weekend, Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc picked up the 400th victory in his head coaching career. The Hokies' head coach, who is the school's 25th head coach in program history and is in his first season leading the team, had previously won 180 games in five seasons at Maryland (2013-17) and 212 games in seven years at Marist (1996-2002).

At least .500 after two ACC weekends: With the series win over Pittsburgh in its first ACC weekend, it marked just the third time in 14 seasons the Hokies won their ACC series opener (2007 at No. 21 Georgia Tech and 2010 versus Maryland). Getting one game at Georgia Tech last weekend secured a .500 record for the Hokies after two weekends of conference play. Only twice has the team had a winning record after weekend No. 2 - posting a 4-2 record in both 2013 (after opening 1-2 vs. Georgia Tech, swept Duke on the road) and 2015 (after opening 1-2 at Wake Forest, swept Virginia at home). The team has been .500 (at 3-3) in 2007, 2014 and 2017.

And after the third weekend: Three straight seasons - 2013, 2014 & 2015 - are the only three seasons the Hokies have ended their third ACC weekend with a winning record. Tech was 5-4 each time. The team has only been 4-3 twice (2013, 2015) and has never won five of its first eight.
