The Virginia Tech women's golf team opened with a 5-over 293 on Friday and is in second place entering the second round of the 3M Augusta Invitational. The three-day event, hosted by Augusta University, is being played at the par 72, 6,228-yard Forest Hills Golf Course in Augusta.
Amanda Hollandsworth got off to a hot start on Friday, shooting a 4-under 68 and is in second place individually. The redshirt junior from Floyd, Virginia is two strokes behind Jillian Hollis of Georgia. She had four birdies and an eagle-three on the 487-yard, par 5 sixth hole. The 68 is her low round of the season and her second-lowest round at Virginia Tech.
Elizabeth Bose, a junior from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 13th overall at 73 and Emily Mahar, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia is tied for 21st at 74. Sarah Spicer, a redshirt freshman from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 48th at 78 and Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 56th at 79.
Georgia holds the team lead after the first round at 7-under 281, 12 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Defending champion Purdue is third at 294, Central Arkansas is fourth at 295 and host Augusta and Memphis are tied for fifth at 296. Mercer and Daytona State are tied for seventh at 298, Middle Tennessee State is ninth at 306 and East Tennessee State is 10th at 307. Troy, Eastern Michigan, Southern Mississippi, James Madisonand Columbia round out spots 11 through 15.
The second round will be play on Saturday. The Hokies will begin on the first tee at 9:30 a.m., paired with Georgia and Purdue. Live scoring is available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com
