Coach Szefc, Hokies set for 2018 baseball home opener today

BLACKSBURG – Fans wishing to attend the Hokies' home baseball opener today can so, free of charge at English Field at Union Park. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. with seating available in the terrace section only for this contest.

All fans must enter the terrace section via the entrance adjacent to the James C. Weaver Baseball Center for this game only. Temporary restroom facilities will be available outside of the Weaver Center.

Winter weather conditions at the construction site in recent weeks have contributed to delays in the $18 million renovation project at Tech's baseball facility, meaning the stadium seating bowl and other amenities will not be available for this contest. Further details on what Tech baseball fans can expect this season at English Field at Union Park will be announced once finalized.

Tech's opening series at English Field at Union Park against Pittsburgh is set to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 9. The Hokies and Panthers will continue play on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11.

The Hokies are in their initial season under head coach John Szefc, who registered his first victory at Tech by a 14-6 count over Oklahoma on February 18. Szefc took over the helm of the program after leading Maryland to three NCAA appearances and a 180-122 (.596) overall record as the Terrapins' head coach. He owned a 392-259-3 (.602) career record in 12 previous seasons as an NCAA head coach, producing 10 campaigns with 30 or more wins.
