MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Virginia Tech Hokies pounded out 12 hits and made the most of six Oklahoma Sooners miscues to record their first win of the 2018 season, which is also the first for new head coach John Szefc. The victory comes on the third day of the 19th Annual Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach tournament as the Hokies soundly defeated the Sooners, 14-6, Sunday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field.
Every Tech starter crossed the plate in the contest with Sam Fragale scoring a team-high three times. Leading the Hokies in hits was Jack Owens, as he tied his career-high with a four-hit effort, while Joe Freiday, Jr. tied his career high with a game-high four RBI.
Tech (1-2) scored a combined 11 runs over the third and fourth frames to quickly jump out to a double-digit lead. The Hokies sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs in the third, aided by four Oklahoma (1-3) errors, and batted around in the fourth, with Freiday getting a key two-out, three-RBI double to cap the five-run fourth inning.
Benefiting from the offensive explosion was Dylan Hall, who made his first start in a Tech uniform. He picked up his second career with for the Hokies after tossing 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, one earned run and striking out four.
Additional Notes
- This was the third meeting between the two programs, as the first since they met at English Field at Union Park on June 2, 2013. The Sooners ending the Hokies season in the NCAA Regional in Blacksburg that year, but Tech holds a 2-1 record in the series.
- Freshmen position players Zach Kokoska, Jojo Odachowski and Brian Sisson and freshman pitcher Zach Brzykcy all made their collegiate debuts in the win.
