Shinholser, Ho and Gruber lead Hokies

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Virginia Tech swimming and diving saw top finishes from Maggie Gruber, Ian Ho and Thomas Shinholser on Saturday in competition at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Tech fell on the men's side to No. 16 Ohio State (207-93) and No. 7 Michigan (196-104). On the women's side, the Hokies defeated Rutgers (218-82), but faltered to the No. 11 Buckeyes (202-98) and the No. 2 Wolverines (224-76).

Gruber was solid for the Hokies on the day, including the top finish for the women's team, winning the 100 back with an NCAA B time of 53.96. She also recorded a second place time of 54.58 in the 100 fly.

Ho and Shinholser led the Hokies on the men's side, each claiming first in their respective events. Ho had a B time of 19.92 in the 50 free while Shinholser scored a 370.58 on the platform.

Shinholser also led a trio of Hokie divers in the 1-meter event, finishing second with a score of 342.08. Eduardo Castro-Silva added a third place finish (324.68) while Ben Schiesl was fourth (321.08).

Tech opened the swimming events with a fifth place finish in the 200-medley relay as Jake Lamparella, Thomas Hallock, Harrison Pierce and Ho turned in a time of 1:29.35.

Norbert Szabo recorded a B time of 1:37.78 to claimed third in the 200 free. He added fourth place finish for the Hokies with a 1:46.70 in the 200 fly and recorded his second B time of the day with a fifth place 1:48.97 in the 200 IM.

Tech finished three, four in the 100 back as Lamparella swam a 49.33 followed by Sean Workman with a 49.46. Sam Tornqvist grabbed second in the 200 back (1:47.26) while Workman took third (1:48.35).

The Hokies wrapped up men's swimming with a second place finish as Lamparella, Ho, David Herbert and Hallock recorded a time of 2:59.60.

Tech women opened the day with a fourth place 1:40.84 in the 200-medley relay off swims from Klaudia Nazieblo, Joelle Vereb, Gruber and Adriana Grabski. Gruber's win in the 100 back came next and saw Meilus finishing fourth in the event with a 55.32.

Vereb claimed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.89) followed by Nazieblo's third place B time of 1:57.96 in the 200 fly. Meilus added a third place finish in the 200 back (1:57.74) with Nazieblo coming in fifth (1:58.48) as both recorded NCAA B times.

The Hokies had back-to-back fifth place finishes with Kelly Henry's 2:18.74 in the 200-yard breaststroke and Reka Gyorgy's 4:51.34 in the 500 free. Vereb took third in the 100 fly with a time of 55.28.

Tech wrapped up the swim events with Nazieblo, Grabski, Gruber and Gyorgy finishing fifth with 3:24.40 in the 400 free relay.

Ashlynn Peters finished second in the women's 1-meter with a score of 291.90.

Swimming and diving will return to the pool Feb. 2-4 when the Hokies host their annual Technotational meet at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
