Hokies host two weekend matches

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to host a pair of ACC matches this weekend, beginning with No. 38 Notre Dame on Friday. Tech will welcome Boston College to the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Sunday.

THE HOKIES (6-8, 1-3 ACC)
Virginia Tech is looking to bounce back after falling to the nation’s top-ranked team, Wake Forest the last time out.

Tech’s Jai Corbett is tabbed 82nd in the ITA singles standings and is 4-7 in the NO. 1 for the Hokies this spring. Freddy Mesmer has a tally of 7-1 while Mitch Harper is 7-6. Jason Kros comes in at 6-6 this spring. In doubles, Harper and Alexandre Ribeiro are 4-2.

THE IRISH (9-6, 1-2 ACC)
Notre Dame fell to No. 3 Virginia 6-1 last weekend before coming back to defeat DePaul 6-1. The Irish’s Guillermo Cabrera picked up the point against the Cavaliers winning over Luca Corinteli in the six.

Josh Hagar is ranked 45th in the ITA for the Irish with a 6-6 tally this season at the one. Matt Gamble is 11-4 in the spring while Cabrera is 9-3.

THE EAGLES (3-7, 0-2 ACC)
Boston College fell to UNLV 7-0 the last time out, but will play at Duke on Friday before heading to Blacksburg for the Sunday match.

Derek Austin has a 5-2 tally this spring to lead the Eagles. Kent Mukai is 5-4 while Alexander Chieffalo is 5-5.

THE SERIES
The Hokies are 4-5 all-time against the Irish and won last season’s meeting 6-1. Harper had a win at five for Tech in the match. Tech is 17-0 in program history against Boston College, claiming last season’s match 7-0.

Up Next: The Hokies will host Clemson on Friday, March 31. Tech will travel to Louisville on Sunday, April 2.
