Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG - The Virginia tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will hit the road for a dual meet against No. 19/NR North Carolina Tar Heels at the Koury Natatorium on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
“We are looking forward to our trip to Chapel Hill,” said head coach Ned Skinner. “UNC has always been an elite ACC swimming school and it will be a great challenge for us It will be fun to have a straight dual meet, which is more rare these days.”
“This competition is going to be a big challenge for both the women and men divers,” said diving coach Ron Piemonte. “UNC is always a very strong diving program, and I am excited to see how our divers compete. We have been training well, and it should be a great matchup both on the boards and in the pool.”
IN THE RANKINGS
The Hokies have checked in CSCAA poll this week with the men at 19th and the women move into the standings at 21st.
The Tar Heels enter the meet with the women’s team sitting at 19th and their men unranked.
THE HOKIES
The Hokies are currently undefeated coming off of a sweep against Queens, VMI, and Liberty. The men have improved to 4-0 while the women have moved to 5-0.
The women’s team was led by Reka Gyorgy and Klaudia Nazieblo. Gyorgy claimed the 200yd free, finishing in first with a time of 1:50.15 while Nazieblo recorded a NCAA B time in the women’s 100yd fly (54.23).
On the men’s side Ian Ho and Lane Stone led the way. Ho recorded a NCAA B time in the men’s 50yd free (19.85) while Stone took home the 200yd freestyle with a time of (1:38.99). The day ended with Thomas Hallock, Norbert Szabo, Harrison Pierce and Ho teaming up to take home the 200yd freestyle relay.
THE TAR HEELS
The men’s team is currently 0-2 coming into this weekend after being defeated by No. 20 South Carolina and No. 12 Georgia. Freshman Valdas Abaliksta was named Men’s ACC Swimmer of the Week after picking up a win in the 100yd backstroke and assisting with a top-time in the 400yd freestyle relay against the Gamecocks.
On the women’s side, the Tar Heels are currently 1-1 coming off a win against No. 22 South Carolina last weekend. UNC’s only loss was at the hands of No. 6 UGA to start the year. This week’s ACC Swimmer of the Week, senior Caroline Baldwin, helped the team to secure top times on four events including the 100yd freestyle, 100yd backstroke and two relay events.
