Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Athletics announced the hiring of Lexi Denny as the recruiting and social media assistant for baseball and softball on Thursday. She will work directly with both programs and their staffs to help attract the best and brightest student-athletes to Virginia Tech.
Denny’s duties will include providing an enhanced social media presence to both coaching staffs, in addition to coordinating on-campus visits and helping create memorable gameday experiences for all fans attending Tech baseball and softball games.
A former team captain in women’s soccer at Radford University, Denny previously served internships in both the Tech and Radford athletic departments. She earned a marketing degree from Radford and served as Vice President of Radford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, as well.
The addition of Denny to the Hokies’ staff coincides with a transformational time in the history of the Tech baseball program, which is celebrating its 125th season in 2018. In conjunction with that anniversary, the Hokies will celebrate the completion of a $20 million renovation of English Field at Union Park, giving Tech baseball a distinct homefield advantage complete with many new amenities for the team and fans alike.
The Tech baseball program also has a new head coach in John Szefc (pronounced SHEF), who joined the Hokies in June after leading Maryland to three NCAA appearances and a 180-122 (.596) overall record in five seasons as the Terrapins’ head coach. He enters his first season in Blacksburg owning a 392-259-3 (.602) career record in 12 seasons as a head coach, producing 10 campaigns with 30 or more wins and reaching seven NCAA Regionals, including back-to-back Super Regionals in 2014-15.
Tech’s softball program is in steady hands under Scot Thomas who has served as the only head coach in school history since the program’s inception in 1996. A two-time Coach of the Year (2007 ACC, 1999 A-10), Thomas owns a 771-538 (.589) career record at Tech and has guided the Hokies to eight NCAA Regionals and an appearance in the 2008 Women’s College World Series.
Virginia Tech’s softball program is also benefitting from significant renovations to their facilities. Within the next year, a new 16,000-square-foot softball facility will be completed and utilized by the team on a year-round basis. In addition to an indoor infield for practice during inclement weather, the building includes four cages for hitting and pitching practice. The facility will also feature two coaches’ rooms, an equipment room, a team room, a film room, a mudroom, and team facilities.
In addition, Tech Softball Park is also seeing ongoing improvements made to graphics and signage, as well as the press box area.
