BLACKSBURG – The ACC announced the 2017 Women’s Lacrosse All-Academic Team on Tuesday. Six Hokies; Mary Claire Byrne, Kristine Loscalzo, Tristan McGinley, Maddy Wollmuth, Marissa Davey and Kelly Glatthorn were included on the team. Each student-athlete earned their first selection.
Student-athletes are considered for the team based on athletic achievement and are required to attain a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and also maintain a 3.0 average for their academic career.
Byrne featured in 17 games for Tech in 2017 making 16 starts in midfield. She scored 16 points on the season through 11 goals and five assists. Byrne also led the conference in caused turnovers per game with 2.18. A redshirt-sophomore, the McLean, Virginia native studies public relations.
Loscalzo started every game for the Hokies and reached the century mark for points in her career on the final day of competition with a goal against Syracuse. The senior who majors in public relations, led Tech with 52 goals on the season including a career-high six against Campbell.
McGinley was Loscalzo’s partner in the attack, amassing 50 goals of her own to go with seven assists on the season. In the circle, McGinley won 95 draw controls setting the single-season record for the program. McGinley, who is a junior studies human development was also a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award presented annually to the most outstanding American college lacrosse player.
Wollmuth started in all 19 games and was a part of the defense that helped goalie Meagh Graham set the school record for goals-against-average with a mark of 9.64. The Stony Brook, New York native majors in marketing.
Davey, a junior chemical engineering student started all 19 contests for the Hokies in 2017 after transferring from UMBC. She contributed 32 goals and also dished out 12 assists for a total of 44 points for the Hokies.
Glatthorn, a political science major started every contest in 2017 and split time between defense and the midfield positions. The Norristown, Pennsylvania native contributed five points to the attack but also was second on the squad with 45 draw controls. She led all outfield players with 35 ground balls.
The 2017 lacrosse team made great strides in John Sung’s first season in Blacksburg, winning 11 games which tied the program record. In addition, the team set program records for most points in a season (326) and goals in a season (253).
