Hokie ClubNEWARK, DEL.- The 14th ranked Virginia Tech lacrosse team defeated Delaware 15-7 on the road Saturday. The game signaled the end of a three-game road stretch that saw Tech win all three games.
Tech scored the first four goals of the game to establish control and never looked back. Kristine Loscalzo, Emma Harden and Tristan McGinley each recorded hat tricks for the Hokies, who advanced to 9-2 for the first time in program history.
“I’m really happy because Delaware is a great team,” coach John Sung said. “We executed the game plan and cherished possessions. The kids played a great game. We started fast getting off to a hot start and we kept the momentum flowing with those four-goal runs in the first half.”
The Hokies took a 9-2 advantage into the half. McGinley and Loscalzo quickly added to that advantage in the opening minutes of the second period, putting Tech firmly in control. Seven Hokies ended up on the scoresheet, including Kelly Glatthorn, Mary Claire Byrne, Taylor Caskey and freshman Kendall Welch.
Glatthorn, a junior from Norristown, Pa. found the net for the first time in 2017. She and Byrne owned the midfield for Tech. Glatthorn finished the game with five draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover. Byrne, the conference’s leader in caused turnovers, added four more to her resume to go with four ground balls. She also had two goals and contributed an assist.
“The defense was great today, they were stingy,” Sung said. “Kids were disciplined today, we didn’t get a card which always helps when you have everyone on the field.”
The defense forced the Blue Hens into 24 turnovers and grabbed 22 ground balls to Delaware’s 14. Delaware only got eight shots on target on the afternoon, with Meagh Graham coming up with one save. The redshirt-junior earned her ninth win of 2017 after playing 51 minutes.
Tech is back in action at Thompson Field on Saturday, March 18 against the William and Mary Tribe. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
