BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving team will wrap up the regular season this weekend at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center where they will face Auburn and Drexel in the Virginia Tech Invitational from Feb. 4-5.
Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. both days with Saturday’s finals kicking off at 6 p.m. and Sunday’s finals beginning at 4 p.m. The weekend will only see swimmers from both teams competing. Both the men and women H2Okies received votes in this week’s CSCAA coaches poll.
Welcome, Reka!
- Competing in her first meet with the H2Okies, freshman Reka Gyorgy impressed many by swimming two NCAA B cut times in the 200 back and 400 IM against Cincinnati and Rutgers.
- She also placed second in the 100 back with a time of 55.57, only a tenth of a second behind the first place finisher.
- Her trial time of 4:17.10 in the 400 IM would’ve beaten the first place finisher, who swam a 4:31.62.
H2Okie men extend home dual win streak
- The Virginia Tech men’s swimmers and divers extended their home winning streak at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center to 27 since the building opened in 2011.
- The H2Okies went 4-0 at home at the CAC this season.
Tech preps for the ACCs
- After both squads finished in the top five at ACC Championships last season, Tech has the experience and talent for another strong run at this year’s conference championship.
- The H2Okie men are led by seniors Brandon Fiala, the ACC Championships’ Most Valuable Swimmer last season, and Robert Owen.
- The divers have been the top scoring men’s team at ACCs the last four years and are led by 2016 ACC bronze medalist Mauro Castro-Silva.
- With the addition of Gyorgy, the H2Okie women look strong with ACC scorers Klaudia Nazieblo, Fiona Donnelly and Jess Hespeler all competing in their final conference championship.
- Sophomore Ashlynn Peters, a two-time ACC Diver of the Week during the regular season, has a chance to reach the podium after placing seventh in the platform at ACCs last season.
