Hokie ClubCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Strong performances from sophomore Ben Schiesl and senior Brandon Fiala highlighted the first day of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving team’s dual meet with in-state foe Virginia on Friday.
The women’s squad (4-2, 1-2 ACC) trail 130-56 while the Tech men (6-0, 3-0 ACC) are behind the ‘Hoos, 102-84. Both team will be back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m.
PERFORMANCES OF THE DAY
- Schiesl set personal bests in the in both the one meter and three meter diving, earning 18 total points for the H2Okie men. He scored a 388.77 in the one meter and a 405.00 in the three meter.
- His one meter score ranks fourth in program history while his three meter score ranks fifth all-time.
- Fiala swam the fastest times in both the 200 IM (1:48.21) and 100 breast (55.09). He was also swam the second leg of the H2Okies’ first place A unit in the 200 free relay.
- The men’s A relay made up of Fiala, junior Ian Ho, sophomore Norbert Szabo and junior Harrison Pierce swam a 1:21.53 to place first in the 200 free relay.
- Junior Klaudia Nazieblo won the 200 fly with a season-best time of 1:57.31.
NOTABLE SWIMS
- Sophomore Ashlynn Peters nearly swept the women’s diving events where she scored a 349.27 to win the three meter, and a 311.48 in the one meter to place second.
- Junior Ian Ho set a new personal best in the 100 free with a second-place time of 44.94. His previous PR was 45.39 set at the ACC championships last season.
- Senior Zach Switzer’s third-place time of 56.23 in the 100 breast set a new personal best.
- Senior Fiona Donnelly swam a 1:58.79 and freshman Chloe Hicks finished with a 2:01.89 to place second and third, respectively, in the 200 back.
