Tech's upset bid falls just short at No. 17 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team lost a tight contest at No. 17 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon, 10-8.

The Hokies trailed 5-3 midway through the first half but scored four unanswered goals that helped them take a 7-6 lead at halftime. Tech scored coming out of the break to go up 8-6 but were unable to contain Ohio State as the Buckeyes scored four goals to take the victory.

Kristine Loscalzo had a team-high three goals off of six shots. Jessi Thon had two goals and one assist while Tristan McGinley and Gracee Hendrix each scored once. Hannah Sieger tied a season-high with eight saves in the cage.

The Hokies are now 5-6 overall on the season while Ohio State improves to 6-1.

Ohio State outshot Virginia Tech 26-17 and 18-14 in shots on goal. The Buckeyes also had a 13-7 edge in draw controls. Tech went 11-of-14 on clears and 2-of-4 on free positions.

Tech opened the scoring with 28:53 left in the first half with a goal from Thon. Ohio State and the Hokies traded goals and the game was tied 2-2 with 16:28 in the half before the Buckeyes tacked on a total of three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead.

Tech responded and scored five of the next six goals to retake the lead at 7-5. Ohio State scored with 22 seconds left in the half to cut the Hokies lead to 7-6 at the break.

Loscalzo would score her third goal of the game and the first of the second half to increase Tech’s lead to 8-6 with 24:13 left in the contest but the Hokies would not score again.

The Buckeyes scored four goals over a span of 15 minutes to take a 10-8 lead with 7:39 left and held on for the victory.

The Hokies will play another nonconference game next Saturday as they travel to William and Mary for a 1 p.m. draw.
