BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (13-4-4) defeated No. 7 Indiana University (12-2-7) 2-1 in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Hokies were able to net the golden goal and advance to the Elite Eight.
The Hoosiers controlled the majority of the first twenty minutes, keeping the ball in Virginia Tech territory. The Hokies were able to get on the board first off their second shot of the day. Elias Tamburini crossed the ball inside the box and found the foot of Brendan Moyers for his first postseason goal. The first forty-five minutes came to a close with Tech up 1-0.
Indiana came out with a vengeance for the second half of play. The Hoosiers added 12 shots looking for that equalizer. They were successful in the 77th minute from a goal by Grant Lillard to tie it at 1-1.
The Hokies punched their ticket to the Quarterfinals in the seventh minute of overtime when Forrest White scored the golden goal.
Tech will face the winner of Wake Forest and SIUE on Dec. 2/3.
Head Coach Mike Brizendine Quotes
-“Today’s result was a great team win. Our 1v1 defending was excellent and I thought Ben Lungdaard played incredible in goal.”
-“I give credit to Indiana for the pressure they put on us in the second half. Moving forward, we need to do a better job of keeping the ball to relieve our back line of some of that pressure. After giving up the goal, the team showed their resilience through the second half and overtime. I am proud of their determination today. Finally, what a great goal to win it on.”
