Hokies advance to the Second Round off a win against ETSU

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (11-4-4) defeated East Tennessee State (12-5-3) 1-0 Thursday night in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Tech was able to secure their ninth shutout of the season, a new program record for shutouts.

Tech saw great chances early in the first half, controlling the ball the first 45. The Hokies were able to get on the board during the 23rd minute when Nico Quashie got his first collegiate goal off a corner kick taken by Elias Tamburini. Virginia Tech was able to maintain control only allowing two shots.

The second half continued much like the first. Tech held control of the ball, allowing East Tennessee State minimal opportunities.

The Hokies will travel to Charlotte on Sunday for the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

Head Coach Mike Brizendine Quotes

-“I would like to congratulate Bo and ETSU on a great season. When you get to this level, every game is going to be close and tight.”

-“I thought that we came out and were able to get back into our rhythm quicker than I expected considering our last match was 15 days ago. Unfortunately, our finishing was not as clean as we would look to see it.”

-“I am very proud of the guys in getting a shutout and a win in the First Round. To set the program record for shutouts here at Virginia Tech in a game of this magnitude is a testament to the hard work this team has put in.”

-“The next few days we will rest, recover and prepare for a skilled Charlotte group.”
