No. 23 Hokies shut out 0-2 by No. 3 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 23 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (9-4-3, 2-4-1) wrapped up their road schedule with a loss to No. 3 North Carolina (11-2-2, 5-1-1) on Saturday night in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels were able to defeat the Hokies 2-0 to clinch the ACC Coastal Division.

The Hokies put pressure on the Tar Heels at the beginning and never let up. Tech maintained possession for the majority of the first 45. Through the first 17 minutes, Marcelo Acuna was the only player on the field with a shot until UNC drew a penalty kick then taken by David October to get the Tar Heels on the board first.

The second half was a different story when it came to possession. North Carolina came out commanding the ball and adding shots early on. The Hokies saw their best chance of the half with eight minutes to play as Acuna drew a diving save from UNC’s James Pyle. The Heels added to their lead with a goal from Tucker Hume in the 87th minute.

Tech returns to Thompson Field Oct. 28 for the regular season finale against Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. with Senior Night celebrations pregame.

Head Coach Mike Brizendine Quotes

-“I am disappointed with the result tonight. It was disappointing to let in that penalty kick because I thought we were in the game the whole first half. I thought we had a comfortable position in the game before that.”

-“North Carolina’s keeper kept them in the game during the second half, coming up big at the end. Pyle kept us off the board and late we pushed forward and ended up giving up a second goal.”

-“The result is not what we wanted but we will push past it and move forward to our last game of the regular season.”
