Hokie ClubCHARLOTTESVILLE- The No. 18 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (7-2-1) went the distance against the University of Virginia Cavaliers (4-2-3) Friday night. The Commonwealth Clash ended in a double overtime, scoreless draw sending Tech to 1-2-1 in the ACC and 3-1-1 on the road.
The rain poured on the Hokies and Cavaliers all game. Both teams created chances for themselves but failed to connect to the back of the net. Tech held strong in the backend and midfield, breaking up the majority of Virginia’s advances.
The second half began with Cavalier pressure and their best chances of the night. Their advances were no problem for the Hokie defense or Ben Lundgaard. On his sixth save of the night, Lundgaard reached the 150 career mark off the physical, defensive battle.
The first overtime came and went as the Hokies entered double over time for the second time this season. During the last ten minutes, Tech saw opportunities but did not capitalize. The Commonwealth Clash ended in a double overtime scoreless draw.
The Hokies return home for next week as they host VMI on Tuesday and Duke on Friday. Both kickoffs are set for 6 p.m. on Thompson Field.
