NEWARK, Del. – The No. 19 Virginia Tech men’s soccer team (7-1-0) shutout the Delaware Blue Hens (6-2-0) 2-0 on Tuesday night. The Hokies’ defense warded off all advances, taking home the sixth shutout of the season.
The Hokies and the Blue Hens both saw good looks in the first half with nothing connecting on either end. Delaware’s advances were no match for Ben Lundgaard and the Hokie defense. Lundgaard tallied two saves off of the nine Delaware shots.
The Hokies brought the momentum from the locker room as Collin Verfurth scored in the 49th minute off an assist from Brendan Moyers. Tech continued the great ball work throughout the half taking five shots on goal. Ryan Marcano secured the Hokie win in the 88th minute as he found the back of the net off an assist from Gino Rossi. Tech earned their sixth shutout of the season.
The Hokies return home to host No. 7 Clemson on Friday at Thompson Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Head Coach Mike Brizendine Quotes
-“Tonight was a great college soccer match between two high quality teams. Going into this game, we told the team that Delaware was an excellent side and we were accurate. We have the upmost respect for Coach Hennessy and the preparation his team had for the game.”
-“I thought that we started slow in the first half. We were fortunate to keep them off the scoreboard headed into the locker room. With that said, the effort we put forward in the second half was much stronger.”
-“I am extremely pleased with the team to be able to get yet another shutout against a talented team. Overall, it was a team effort on both ends of the field. It was great to see Collin and Ryan get their second goals of the season.”
