Hokie ClubCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Reigning national champion Irena Sediva led the Virginia Tech track & field team with a first place finish in the javelin, breaking two records on Saturday at the Virginia Challenge.
Sediva’s 55.96-meter (183-7) throw not only won the event, but also broke two records. Her mark set a new Virginia Challenge and Lannigan Field record on Saturday. Sediva maintained her ranking as No. 2 in the country set at the Florida Relays.
In the same event, Eva Vivod placed third with her 53.92-meter (176-11) throw while Sabine Kopplin rounded out the group, throwing 46.20 meters (151-7).
For the men’s team, Tomas Kruzliak posted a 69.94-meter (229-5) mark in the hammer throw to place third overall, now ranking seventh nationally.
Emily Miller placed fifth in the high jump with her 1.66-meter (5-5.25) clearance to tie for sixth in Virginia Tech program history. She also ran the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.16.
Mackenzie Muldoon finished the 110-meter hurdles in 15.22 to round out the group in Charlottesville.
DURHAM, N.C. - Deakin Volz highlighted Hokies at the Duke Invitational on Saturday with his second place finish in the pole vault.
With his new personal best mark of 5.41 meters (17-9), Volz not only ranks fifth in program history but ties for sixth in the nation.
On the women’s side, Erica Hjerpe cleared 4.23 meters (13-10.5) to place third, ranking second in program history.
Chris Uhle placed fourth with his 5.31-meter (17-5) clearance while Brad Johnson took fifth in 5.21 meters (17-11). James Steck and Jeffrey Linta rounded out the top-10 each with 4.81-meter (15-9.25) marks.
Hannah Meador added a top-10 mark for the women’s team with her 3.78-meter (12-4.75) clearance. Olivia Privitera placed second in the open section of the pole vault with her 3.48-meter (11-5) mark.
AUBURN, Ala. - The Hokies’ sprinters wrapped up the day will all-around performances in each event to set numerous personal best times.
Tech’s 4x100-meter relay of Ama-Selina Tchume, Courtney Blanden, Shanel Burr, and Adeyeni Aromolaran began with day with a season-best time of 45.56.
Burr’s success continued as she advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with her fourth place finish in 13.83. Jada Gundran set a personal record in the same event, clocking in at 14.11 - an ACC qualifying time. On the men’s side, Aaron Simpson finished 13th overall in 14.57.
In the 100-meter dash, Darius Watkins’ 10.55-time was enough to place 10th, but not enough for the final. Dante Price clocked in at 10.72, placing 14th. For the women’s team, Aromolaran took 22nd.
Blanden shined for the Hokies in both the 400 and 200 meters, placing fourth and fifth in the events, respectively. Blanden’s 54.79 400-meter time ranks her sixth in program history while her 23.79 time ranks seventh.
Tchume did the same with personal bests in both the 200 and 400 meters. Her seventh place finish in the 200 meters ranks ninth in program history at 23.86 while her 56.01-time was enough for a personal record in the 400.
Chester Hebden paved the way for Tech in the 400 meters, placing eighth in 48.85.
The Hokies posted three top-15 finishes in the 200-meter dash. Watkins led the group placing seventh with his 21.23 time. Jared Bane set a new personal record in 21.50 while Price clocked in at 21.69.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Austin Kolko led the Hokies with his fourth place overall finish, second-best collegian. His 52.93 finish ranks him eighth in program history, currently in the top-eight in the conference. On the women’s side, Gundran wrapped up the women’s team with another personal best mark.
Tech resumes competition at the Penn Relays, Stanford Invitational, and Radford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
