Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – The 15th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to host Boston College on Friday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. Tech will remain home to take on No. 62 Clemson on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m.
Virginia Tech (10-1, 2-0 ACC) is coming off one of the biggest wins in program history, knocking off No. 2 Duke, 6-1 at home. The Hokies gave up the doubles point, but came back strong to sweep all six singles matches.
Tech picked up big wins with 40th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus knocking off then-eighth ranked Nicolas Alvarez in the No. 1. Joao Monteiro claimed a win over 32nd-ranked Jason Tahir on court two. Monteiro moved into the rankings at 98th. Hunter Koontz won on court three over then 99th-ranked Raphael Hemmeler.
The Hokies’ Amerigo Contini is also ranked, coming in this week at 55th. He and Bjerrehus are 64th in the double standings.
Boston College (4-5, 0-0 ACC) fell to 60th-ranked UC Irvine, 5-2 in the team’s last dual match. The Eagles won a pair of singles matches to pick up the points with Philip Nelson and Kent Mukai winning on courts 1 and 5, respectively. This marks BC’s first ACC match of the season.
Clemson (9-6, 0-1 ACC) defeated College of Charleston, 7-0 and Presbyterian 5-2 last weekend in a doubleheader. However, the Tigers will face Virginia on Friday before traveling to Blacksburg for Sunday’s match.
The Tigers enter the weekend with Hunter Harrington ranked 91st in the ITA. He has posted a 6-6 record this season. Alejandro Augusto is 84 while Luke Johnson has a 7-6 mark.
Following the weekend’s matches, the Hokies will take to the road, traveling south for Wake Forest on March 20 and NC State on March 22.
