Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG, Va. – The 37th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to host No. 22 Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 7 in a 1 p.m. match at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Hokies (4-1) are coming off a 7-0 win over Marquette last weekend. Tech won the doubles point with wins on courts 1 and 3 and swept all six singles matches, winning five of them in straight sets.
Virginia Tech’s 35th-ranked Amerigo Contini has put together a 4-0 record so far this dual season in the No. 1. The junior player is 13-5 overall on the year. Andreas Bjerrehus, ranked 61st, is 3-1 in the No. 2 and is 11-5 overall. Senior Hunter Koontz also has a perfect record in duals, going 4-0 while seeing time in the No. 2, 3 and 4. Koontz missed much of the fall with an injury, but did get on the court for one tournament and has a 5-1 record overall.
Florian Nicoud is also ranked for the Hokies at 94th; he is 3-1 in duals and has a 14-5 record this season. Joao Monteiro is 3-0 in duals, 11-4 overall while Edoardo Tessaro, who joined the team in January, has posted a 3-1 record so far in duals.
Penn State (3-1) split decisions in a doubleheader last weekend, falling 5-2 to Penn before knocking off Temple 7-0. The Nittany Lions enter the match ranked 22nd as a team, but on the individual side only have a doubles duo in the rankings as Nika Dolidze and Tomas Hanzlik are 59th.
Matt Berry has put together a 4-0 record in singles, appearing in the No. 2, 3 and 4. Alex Fennell is 2-2, having seen time in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Hanzlik, Roman Trkulja and Aws Laaribi have all put together records of 2-1 in the dual season.
