Bjerrehus opens play at Davis Cup

ANTVORSKOVHALLEN, Denmark – Virginia Tech senior Andreas Bjerrehus opened play at the 2015 Davis Cup on Friday, playing Sweden’s world-ranked Markus Eriksson to an exciting five-sets before falling 3-2.

Bjerrehus, representing his home country of Denmark on the international stage, battled 457th-ranked Eriksson with the first four-sets going into tiebreakers and the fifth set playing out as an advantage set like Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open.

Bjerrehus won the first two sets 7-6(5), but Eriksson rallied back to take the third and fourth sets with scores of 7-6(3) in both.

The two players went back and forth in the fifth with each scoring on serve and were tied at 6-6 before Bjerrehus broke Eriksson’s serve to go on top 7-6. The Swedish player answered with a break of his own to tie it back up at 7-7. The two kept it close, but Erkisson held on to secure the set 9-7, winning the match.

Bjerrehus will be back on the court on Sunday when he faces Sweden’s Mikael Ymer.
