Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team capped off its historic season ranked 18th in the final ITA poll of the season while Andreas Bjerrehus, Amerigo Contini, Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro were tabbed in the singles standings.
The ranking is the highest final finish for the Hokies in program history, eclipsing the previous high of 24th in 2010. In addition, the four players ranked in singles are the most the Hokies have had appear in the final standings. Tech also finished second in the Atlantic Region.
Head Coach Jim Thompson guided the Hokies to a 20-5 overall record, including 10-2 in the league. Tech finished the season second in the ACC, earning Thompson ACC Coach of the Year honors while Stephen Huss was named the Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Bjerrehus finished the season 52nd nationally and fifth in the region after representing the Hokies at the NCAA Men’s Singles Championship. He tallied a 25-12 record and was 17-7 in duals. The Tech junior earned All-ACC Men’s Tennis honors for the third straight season.
Contini finished 77th nationally while coming in sixth in the region after posting a 13-7 mark in duals this season. In addition he earned his third consecutive All-ACC Men’s Tennis recognition this year.
Koontz earned his first nationally ranking this season as a senior after compiling an impressive 19-2 record in dual play. He finishes the season 113th nationally and eighth regionally. This season marked the first All-ACC honors for Koontz.
Monteiro also had a strong season for Tech, tallying a 15-4 record in duals to finish ranked 115th nationally and ninth in the region. He claimed All-ACC recognition for the second straight season.
Bjerrehus and Koontz paired up in doubles to record a 7-3 record in the No. 1, finishing the season ranked 52nd by the ITA nationally and third in the Atlantic Region.
Newcomer Edoardo Tessaro had a solid rookie season, claiming a regional ranking of 16th after putting together an 18-4 dual record. In addition, Bjerrehus and Contini were tabbed in the final regional doubles poll at sixth with a 4-3 mark.
