The weekend series: Tech welcomes Clemson to English Field for the first time since the Hokies ended the 2011 season with a 3-2 win over the No. 13 Tigers on May 15. Clemson, though, won that series and has won three straight series in the matchup. The Hokies have won just one of eight series since joining the ACC - a 2-1 win in April 2009.
Perez is the nation’s Ironman: Entering the weekend, Tech’s Alex Perez is one of five seniors in DI baseball to have started every one of his team’s games since stepping foot on campus. Perez’ 191 consecutive starts is currently the longest streak in the nation and the longest to start a career at Tech. Of his 191 starts at Tech, 137 have been at second base, 50 have been at shortstop and four have been on the mound.
Tech sweeps No. 1 Virginia: For the first time as a member of the ACC, the Hokies swept a series against a nationally-ranked team when they took all three games against the top-ranked Cavaliers last weekend in Blacksburg. Entering the weekend, Tech had won just nine series against ranked teams, as a member of the ACC, with seven of those coming at home.
The sweep also gave the Hokies their seventh sweep of an ACC opponent, ironically, one a year for the past seven years and includes sweeping Pittsburgh in last year’s home opening ACC weekend. The others are at Maryland (2009, 2011) and at Duke (2013) and home sweeps against Boston College (2010, 2012).
Another solid start to the ACC: The wins over Virginia improved the team’s ACC record to 4-2 - tying for the school’s best mark after two weeks with the 2013 squad. Looking ahead, after nine games in conference action, the Hokies best start is 5-4 done twice - the past two seasons (2013 and 2014).
Keselica named ACC Pitcher of the Week: Senior Sean Keselica became just the third Tech pitcher to be selected as the ACC’s Pitcher of the Week and the first since 2010 for his effort against Virginia last weekend - a complete game, four-hitter with one unearned run in the 2-1 Tech win.
Former Tech pitcher Justin Wright earned three (March 29 and April 5, 2010 and April 27, 2009), while Ryan Kennedy (Feb. 21 and May 2, 2005) got it twice in his time at Tech.
