BLACKSBURG, Va. – Day two of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational in Orlando is in the books with the Hokies going 3-4 in singles play and a perfect 2-0 in doubles.
In singles, Columbia’s Joana Eidukonyte defeated Elena Cerezo-Codina (6-3, 6-3) in the second round before ending the run of Francesca Fusinato in the third round. Fusinato defeated Northwestern’s Brooke Rischbieth 6-2, 6-4 before falling to Eidukonyte 6-1, 6-0.
Sansitha Nandakumar defeated Youngstown State’s Dominika Lackova (6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-2) but later fell to Florida State’s Yukako Noi 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Raluca Mita fell to Florida State’s Emily Fanning 2-6, 6-2, 6-3
Katherine Butler advanced to the quarterfinals of the C bracket with a 6-4, 6-1 win over SU’s Carolina Meregalli.
In doubles play, Fusinato/Mita beat South Florida’s Garrido-Rivas/Bessonova 8-6 in the A draw, while Cerezo-Codina/Nandakumar took care of Northwestern’s Peri/Rooney by a score of 8-2 in the B draw.
Tech will continue play tomorrow beginning with Katherine Butler’s singles match against Monica Matias of Central Florida at 9:30 a.m. At 12:30, Fusinato and Mita will face Auburn’s No. 1 seeded Kucharova/Muller while Cerezo-Codina/Nandakumar take on Central Florida’s Johnson/Eberhart in doubles semifinal action.
