Hawkins through to 3-meter finals at Winter Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Ryan Hawkins of the Virginia Tech diving team advanced to the finals of the 3-meter Springboard on Wednesday evening, leading the way for a trio of H2Okie divers at the 2013 USA Diving Winter National Championships.

Competing in a field of 30 in the 3-meter event, Hawkins recorded a score of 388.35 in the morning’s quarterfinals, the eighth-best score, to advance to the evening’s semifinal found.

In the semifinals, which include points accumulated in the quarterfinals, Hawkins finished in 11th place with 728.15 points, making the 12-person cut for Saturday’s finals.

In the women’s 10-meter platform, junior Kelli Stockton advanced into the evening semifinals with a score of 254.55 during the morning session, good for 11th place.

The semifinals, however, saw her fall just short of the 12-person cutoff, as her total score of 497.65 left her in 13th place, less than six points shy of the finals.

Junior Kaylea Arnett, who was also entered in the 10-meter event, tweaked an injury during morning warm-ups and was forced to withdraw.

The H2Okies will be back in action tomorrow, as Hawkins competes in the 10-meter Platform and the women compete in the 3-meter springboard. Quarterfinals will kick off at 10 a.m., beginning with the women’s 3-meter.
