Trio of H2Okies head to USA Diving Winter Nationals

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Three members of the Virginia Tech diving team will compete in the USA Diving Winter National Championships this week, as senior Ryan Hawkins and juniors Kaylea Arnett and Kelli Stockton all head to Austin, Texas for competition from Wednesday-Sunday.

All three divers will compete individually in both the 3-meter event and 10-meter platform event. Arnett will also compete in the 3-meter synchronized event, in which she won a national title this summer, with incoming H2okie Emma Villarreal, who will join the team in 2014.

“I am excited for our divers to compete in this extremely high-level event,” Diving Coach Ron Piemonte said. “It will only help them as we get ready to head into the championship segment of our season. This is a great way for them to finish out this portion of their training.”

The five-day event, held at the University of Texas in Austin, will welcome roughly 150 of the nation’s best divers to compete for 10 national titles. The event will also be used to select international teams for the FINA Grand Prix, FINA World Series and FINA World Cup.

The men’s 3-meter quarterfinals and women’s 10-meter platform quarterfinals will be held Wednesday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. Semifinals for both events will follow at 5:30 p.m.
