Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech women’s basketball players Taijah Campbell and newcomer Samantha Hill are competing for Canada this summer while incoming freshmen Maddie Penn and Vanessa Panousis are playing for team Australia.
Campbell is competing on Canada’s Senior Developmental team and will be playing in Russia at the 27th World University Games. The women’s competition begins on July 8 when Canada faces Japan. Campbell was averaging 4.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 17 games played for the Hokies before being sidelined by an injury midway through the season. She had a career-high 14 points against Florida Gulf Coast and a best 11 rebounds versus George Washington.
The games were first held in 1959 in Italy. Most recently, the games were hosted by China in 2011.
Hill, Penn and Panousis are all competing for their respective countries at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships in Lithuania. The competition is set to begin on July 18. Team Canada will face Senegal on the opening day while Australia is set to square off against Argentina. Canada is competing in Group C along with France, the Netherlands and Senegal. Australia is in Group B, which also has Japan, Spain and Argentina.
The FIBA tournament is held every two years and was last played in Chile in 2011.
