Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG, Va. – Seniors Logan Kline and Logan Shinholser and sophomore Kaylea Arnett of the Virginia Tech diving squad automatically qualified for the 2013 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday, the first day of the NCAA Zone A Championships, at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Two-time ACC Champion Arnett reset her own school and pool record by winning the 3-meter event with a six-dive score of 388.30.
The Spring, Texas, native tallied an overall score of 706.55 to beat out all other competitors by at least 37.9 points.
With the top three automatically advancing to the National Championships in the women’s 3-meter, Kline will join Arnett as she scored an overall 627.65 (preliminaries and finals) to secure third place to book her flight.
All four of Tech’s women advanced to the finals on the first day. Sophomore Kelli Stockton placed sixth with a score of 581.45 and senior Sara Mokhtari took eighth with 559.30 points.
Joining Arnett and Kline in the national pool is Shinholser as he won the men’s 1-meter event by almost 30 points. The Burtonsville, Md., native took a score of 704.55 to win the event.
The H2Okie men had five competitors compete today but freshman Logan Stevens was pulled out of the competition due to injury. But the four remaining Tech males advanced to the finals.
Sophomore Kyle Butts placed fourth with a score of 632.90, while junior Ryan Hawkins followed in sixth with 606.10 points. Junior John Trope rounded out the pack, as he took eighth, hitting a 582.35 mark.
Competition will start back up tomorrow, March 16 with the men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter events starting at 12 p.m.
