No. 17 H2Okie men defeat Wisconsin in final dual contest

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program concluded the 2012-13 dual schedule with a two-day tri-meet at the University of Virginia Saturday at the Aquatic Fitness Center. The No. 17 Tech men defeated the Wisconsin Badgers, 204-155, while falling to the No. 11 Cavaliers, 165.5-202.5. The H2Okie women fell to No. 10 Virginia, 151-214, and to Wisconsin, 159-206.

The men improved to 9-2-1 on the dual season, while the women fell to 8-5.

The Tech diving squad shined at the meet, as Kaylea Arnett and Logan Shinholser were victorious on the springboards. Arnett racked in a total of 355.95 on the 3-meter to set a Aquatic Fitness Center record. Kelli Stockton and Logan Kline followed in second and third place for the women.

Shinholser won the 1-meter event with a score of 406.80, while Ryan Hawkins took second with a total of 347.90.

Tech swimming won a total of six events. The day started with the quartet of Zach McGinnis, Nathan Hoisington, Gregory Mahon and Joe Bonk swam a time of 1:29.54 to win the 200 medley relay.

Heather Savage and Weronika Paluszek were the only H2Okie women to win an event. Savage dominated the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.63, almost two seconds faster than second place. Paluszek took home the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.00.

McGinnis took home the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.68, while being one of three H2Okie men to place in the top five of the 50 freestyle. Despite Virginia taking winning the event, Bonk placed second, Emmett Dignan took third, while McGinnis placed fourth.

The men took two more relay events. The 200 freestyle relay team consisting of McGinnis, Dignan, Mahon and Bonk swam a time of 1:21.28 to take of the title. The ‘B’ team of Drake Becksted, Owen Burns, Lucas Bureau and Kevin Hunt placed third with a time of 1:24.09.

McGinnis, Hoisington, Mahon and Bonk swam another of 3:17.48 to win the 400 medley relay to end the tri-meet this afternoon.

The H2Okies will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 9 as Tech hosts the annual Virginia Tech Invitational that starts at 10 a.m.
