H2Okies sweep William & Mary and Miami on Senior Day

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program hosted the William & Mary Tribe and the Miami Hurricanes Saturday afternoon at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center for their final home dual contest of the season. The H2Okie men dominated as they defeated the Tribe, 160-97, while the women swept the Hurricanes, 185.5-112.5, and the Tribe, 163-99.

The men improved to 8-1-1 on the dual season, while the women upped their total to 8-3. Both teams remained undefeated at the CAC this season.

The H2Okie men started the day off flawless at they took the first 10 events. Nine different H2Okies took home individual titles, while Jake Ores and Zach McGinnis led the way with two each.

Ores swept the distance freestyle events as he took the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:41.45 and the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:38.04. McGinnis took the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, coming in at the 20.91 and 50.55 marks, respectively.

The men went 1-and-2 in seven events, including the diving portion that placed three Tech men in the top three. Senior Logan Shinholser continued his 11-event winning streak as he took the 3-meter event with a score of 350.55, while Kyle Butts and Ryan Hawkins took second and third.

On the women’s side, the H2Okies took nine events with seven different Tech women taking home titles. Senior Heather Savage and freshman Weronika Paluszek led the way, as they brought home two events apiece. Savage was the first to touch the wall of the 200 butterfly and 100 butterfly events, while Paluszek swept the breaststroke events.

At the second break the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program honored 18 of its seniors as it was their last dual meet in the CAC.

The H2Okies will be back in action Friday, Jan. 25 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., to take on in-state rival Virginia along with Wisconsin for a two-day meet. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.
