Tech travels to North Carolina for two matches

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 63 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team takes to the road for a pair of ACC matches in North Carolina, beginning with Wake Forest on Saturday, March 31 in a noon match in Winston-Salem. On Sunday, April 1, the Hokies will face NC State at 1 p.m. in Raleigh.

Tech (11-7, 2-3 ACC) is looking to bounce back after falling to No. 5 Duke the last time out. The Hokies’ Shannon Betts has tallied an 11-6 mark in duals this season, including a 10-5 record in the No. 3. Carol Kahoun is 11-7 and has seen time in the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles while Emily Lauten is 10-7, playing in the No. 4, 5 and 6. Senior Martha Blakely has tallied a 9-8 record in the No. 1 singles and Isel Martinez-Marcos is 8-9 in duals.

The Demon Deacons (3-11, 0-5 ACC) fell to Florida State in their last match. Wake is led by Kayla Duncan who is ranked 63rd in the latest ITA standings. She has an 8-5 record in the No. 1 singles this season. Teammate Ryann Cutillo is 9-5 in duals, including a 9-4 record in the No. 2. In doubles, Duncan has teamed up with Kathryn Talbert and the two have earned a No. 63 ranking in the ITA.

NC State (5-11, 1-4 ACC) dropped its last match to Miami, 6-1. The Wolfpack’s Joelle Kissell is the 37th-ranked player in the ITA and has an 11-5 record in the No. 1 singles. Tatiana Illova has tallied a 5-9 record in duals.

The Hokies will return home to wrap up their home slate next weekend, hosting Georgia Tech and Clemson on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
