Hokie ClubBUIES CREEK, N.C. – After a thunderstorm rolled through Buies Creek, with lightning forcing the game to start an hour late, the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team was defeated by Campbell, 3-0, at Eakes Athletic Complex
"Tonight was a tough loss for us against a good Campbell side," Virginia Tech head coach Mike Brizendine said. "I think our lack of depth is really starting to show itself right now. We're going to have to regroup the next two days and get ready for a tough home game against NJIT."
The Hokies (4-5-1) started off quick notching a pair of shots and earning a corner kick within the first five minutes of play, but Campbell struck back getting off five shots in the following eight minutes, forcing three saves out of Tech goalkeeper Kyle Renfro. Despite the Camels holding a 10-2 advantage in shots at the half, the Hokies were able to keep the game level at the half.
Campbell (7-2-1) broke the deadlock in the 50th minute as Jhvon Francis scored his second goal of the season. Mitchell Cardenas doubled the Camels’ lead six minutes later with his fourth goal of the year. Francis struck again in the 63rd minute on a half volley to give Campbell a 3-0 advantage.
Renfro came away with six saves on the night, but the 13-minute three-goal stretch in the second half was the difference for Campbell. The Camels held an 18-7 shot advantage in the game. Jed Prater and Daniel Lauretano each led Tech with two shots, while Lauretano and Ben Strong each tallied a shot on goal.
The Hokies return to Thompson Field on Friday when the team hosts NJIT. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
