The Virginia Tech football team (3-1) will hit the road for a non-conference game with the Bearcats of Cincinnati (2-0) at FedExField in Landover, Md. Kick-off is set for 3:32 p.m. on Saturday and the game will be televised on ESPNU. The announcers will be Anish Shrof and Gary Barnett.
The Series
• Saturday’s game will be the 10th football meeting between Tech and the University of Cincinnati with the Hokies leading 5-4 in a series that dates back to 1947.
• The Bearcats won the first three meetings between the two schools, including an 18-7 decision in the Sun Bowl following the 1946 season. UC also registered a 31-14 win at home in 1985 and downed the Hokies, 24-20, at Blacksburg in the 1986 season opener.
• Tech then won the next three games to tie the series. The Hokies edged UC, 21-20, in Blacksburg during the 1987 season, won at UC, 41-14, in 1988 and posted a 56-9 decision at Lane Stadium in 1991.
• In 1995, the Bearcats shut out the Hokies 16-0 at Lane Stadium. Tech has gone on to score in 221 straight games since then. In 2006, the Hokies beat the Bearcats 29-13 at home and Virginia Tech downed the Bearcats 20-7 in the Orange Bowl following the 2008 season at SunLife Stadium in Florida.
• This will be the fifth different site for a Tech-Cincinnati football game as they meet for the 10th time, this time in Landover, Md. The Hokies and Bearcats have also met in El Paso, Texas (1946 Sun Bowl), Cincinnati (2 times), Blacksburg (5 times) and Miami, Fla. (2009 Orange Bowl).
Tech at Neutral Sites
• Tech has a 149-127-19 record in football games played at neutral sites. The Hokies are 12-18 in neutral site games during head coach Frank Beamer’s 26 seasons.
At Current NFL Stadiums
• Tech is 10-20 under head coach Frank Beamer at current NFL stadiums, including 0-2 at FedExField, where Saturday’s game will be played. In addition to FedExField, the record includes games played at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome (1-2), Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (1-0), Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field (0-3), Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium (1-2), Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field (1-0), the Mercedes Benz Superdome (1-4), Jacksonville’s EverBank Field (3-3) and Sun Life Stadium in Miami (2-4).
Game Information
• This game is Cincinnati’s game and the Bearcats are the designated home team. Parking is included in the price of a game ticket. Fans just show their ticket for access to the parking lots. Directions and more information can be found here. These are for Redskins games, so the times and poilicies may differ for a college event.
• Fans can also take the Metro to the game. Take the Blue Line to the Morgan Boulevard Metro Station. Exit onto the sidewalk, which will be on your right side after exiting the Metro gates, opposite the parking lot exit. Follow the sidewalk for less than a mile to FedExField.
Hokie/Redskin Connection
• Two current Tech players have fathers who played for the Washington Redskins - Jeron Gouveia-Winslow and Alston Smith. Gouveia-Winslow is the son of Kurt Gouveia and Smith is the son of Bruce Smith. Both fathers played several years with the Redskins, but only Smith played in FedExField, site of Saturday’s game.
• For all of Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer’s awards, honors and accolades, he also has a streak that’s little known, but incredible in its own right. Beamer has had at least one son of a former Washington Redskin on his roster for 16 consecutive years and that streak should continue on with the addition of freshman Alston Smith, son of Bruce Smith, to the roster this year.
• The streak was bolstered by a run of 10 straight years with a Warren on the roster (first Blake, then Brett, and then Beau) from 2001-2011.
