TOWSON, Md. – Divers Logan Kline and Ryan Hawkins of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program earned spots on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s and Women’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday afternoon.
Kline, a second team selection of the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Women’s At-Large team, is the fourth female H2Okie to garner Capital One Academic All-America At-Large honors and just the second to be placed on the second team. Hawkins, who was placed on the men's third team, is just the second Virginia Tech male swimmer to earn the award.
This is the third academic honor for Kline this season, as the Mission Hill, Kan., native was selected to the women’s Capital One Academic All-District and All-ACC Academic teams. Kline was named an All-American in the 1-meter event at the 2012 NCAA Championships, while earning Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 3-meter event. She set a school record in the 3-meter and platform events, with second-place finishes at the ACC Championships.
A biological science major with a grade-point average of 3.79 and just completed her junior season, transferred to Tech a year ago from Indiana. As a Hoosier, she was placed on the 2011 Academic All-Big Ten team.
Hawkins also collected his third academic honor this season, which includes the men’s Capital One Academic All-District and All-ACC Academic teams. As he just completed his sophomore season, Hawkins was named an All-American in the platform event at the 2012 NCAA Championships and earned his first ACC title in the platform, as well. The Charlotte, N.C., native is an architecture major with a grade-point average of 3.85.
The Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wresting. The women's program includes bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.
