GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s outdoor track & field team placed seven student-athletes on the 2012 All-ACC Academic Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Team as announced on Friday by the league office.
Virginia Tech, along with Duke, lead all ACC schools with seven athletes on the team. Representing the Hokies are Alexander Ziegler, Hasheem Halim and Matthias Treff as three-time honorees while William Mulherin picks up the honor for the second time. Christopher Walizer, Jason Cusack and Ronnie Black earn their first nod to the academic team.
Florida State's Gonzalo Barroilhet has been recognized as the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Ziegler won his second consecutive title in the hammer throw at the 2012 NCAA Championships by more than 20 feet, including a fifth round attempt of 248-7 (75.78m) to earn a spot as a semifinalist for The Bowerman Award. The junior management major secured a spot on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Track & Field/Cross Country second team.
Halim placed fourth in the triple jump at the NCAA Championship to earn first team All-America honors. The senior also garnered All-ACC honors in the triple jump after placing third at the conference meet. The architecture major earned the team’s Coaches’ Award.
Treff placed third in the javelin throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a season-best mark of 248-9 (75.83m), earning first team All-America honors. He won his third career ACC title in the javelin throw. The junior earns his third conference academic honor as an industrial systems engineering major.
Mulherin picks up his second academic honor and won his third ACC Championship in the 5,000-meter this season. The senior mechanical engineering major was named the ACC Men’s Performer of the Week after winning the Raleigh Relays and resetting his own school record in the 5,000m.
Walizer, a human nutrition, foods and exercise major, earned All-ACC honors with a third place finish in the 1500-meters at the ACC Championships. The senior mid-distance runner qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary and placed 14th in the quarterfinals.
Cusack won Tech’s first ACC title in the 3000-meter steeplechase this season. The industrial design major qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary where he finished seventh in his heat and 26th overall.
Black, a double major in chemistry and psychology, recorded a ninth place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Championships, earning second team All-America honors. The junior won the high jump at the NCAA East Prelims with a mark of 7-2.25 (2.19m).
Seventeen selections to the All-ACC Academic Team are repeat honorees. Florida State's Michael Fout, Virginia Tech's Ziegler, Halim, and Treff, and Wake Forest's Paul Loeser earned their third career recognition.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
