SANTA MONICA, Ca. - Virginia Tech golfer Trevor Cone has been named to the 2012 Division I PING All-East Region golf team, as selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Cone, a freshman, from Concord, N.C., is one of 25 players on the East Region team. He is the first freshman from Virginia Tech to earn the honor and he joins Brendon de Jonge, Johnson Wagner, Jurrian van der Vaart, Drew Weaver, Curtis Deal and current Virginia Tech associate head coach Brian Sharp as the only Hokie players to previously earn the honor. Sharp and de Jonge were twice selected.
Cone led the Hokies in stroke average this season, with 73.13. He recorded five top 20 finishes this season, including two top five finishes and one top 10 finish. His best performance of his freshman season at Virginia Tech was a third place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club in October.
Cone and the Hokies competed their season on May 31 at the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at the Riviera Country Club. The Hokies finished 24th in the nation in the 2011-12 season.
