Hokie ClubFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Sophomore Ryan Hawkins and junior Logan Shinholser of the Virginia Tech diving program completed their FINA international Grand Prix tour, as they won the bronze medal in the synchronized men’s platform event at the 2012 AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix Sunday afternoon at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.
Among the best divers in the world, the duo scored a 379.53 to be the top USA team in the event and to place third overall. China’s Huo Liang and Aisen Chen won the event, scoring a 442.29.
“In Canada, the nerves got the best of them,” commented head diving coach Ron Piemonte. “However here in Fort Lauderdale, Logan and Ryan seemed more composed and as a result they did a very consistent job. They didn’t miss any dives and their synchronization was excellent. Getting to compete in these world class events and to bring home a medal should prove to be invaluable experience for the rest of their careers.”
In addition to the men’s synchronized platform event, Shinholser competed individually in the men’s platform. The junior placed 15th with a score of 352.60 in the preliminary round.
The two will enjoy a long break from competition and join teammates Kaylea Arnett, Logan Kline and Kelli Stockton in preparation for the Olympic Trials on June 17-24, in Federal Way, Wash.
